Building and air pollution
Energy use and carbon emission in buildings are closely related to air quality.

The outbreak of Covid-19 sparks people’s awareness on indoor air quality and viral transmission. It is estimated that people spend 90% of time indoor. According to UNEP, the building sector also accounts for 36% of energy consumption and 39% of carbon emission in the world.

How can we enhance the energy efficiency of a building, while improve the indoor air quality? The WELL Building Standard has offered a set of principles that help reduce air pollutants and energy consumption.

Case study: the renovation in Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation

Delta helped Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation install high-performance fresh air ventilation systems and UNO indoor air quality solution, which provided a healthy and comfortable rehabilitation environment for burn patients. The systems enable the introduction of the fresh air to the indoor without opening windows and can reduce energy consumption of AC by 30% in summer time.

Transport and air pollution

The transport sector is crucial to reducing carbon emission and air pollution. According to Ministry of Transportation & Communications, vehicles account for 27.5% of PM 2.5 emission in Taiwan. 49% of NOx and 54% of CO emission are also ascribed to moving pollution sources.

In many countries, at least one-third of PM2.5 emissions come from the transport sector. Governments are adopting measures to restrict the internal combustion engine vehicles and promote electric vehicles. According to American Lung Association, if U.S. transportation sources meaningfully electrified, the country could save $72 billion in health costs and 6,300 lives.

To mitigate climate change and air pollution, Delta joins RE100 and EV100 to commit itself to 100% renewable electricity and providing EV charging infrastructure by 2030.

Delta’s action: Film “Sky”

The sky is changing, and soundlessly affecting our society and environment. We need to face up to it and make a change for the land and people we love.

To evoke people’s awareness on air pollution, Delta invited Mr. Chien-Chang Lu, a talented director of Taiwan, to produce a film based on a true story about a family and air pollution. It makes people see how a family is being strong in the loss.

Since the film is aired online, it has accumulated 150 thousands views. Commentaries include “it is a good film making us to reflect”, and “it really moves people and let’s put efforts to reduce air pollution for next generation”.

The director considers that everyone is equally vulnerable to air pollution regardless of status. Many people witness how the change of environment deteriorates their health situations, but most of us fail to act against air pollution. Through film “sky”, the director hopes to show the efforts from a group of people to improve the environment and encourage more people to be involved.
